The Entune seamlessly combines all of the most convenient apps with your dashboard touchscreen. (One of the more brilliant features is that you don’t have to actually download the apps, the Entune software comes with them already installed.) Voice command can be synced up so you can tell the system, “I need to pick up some caviar,” and the Entune will search the area for places that sell caviar. This software demonstrated at CES on both an iPhone and an Android-powered smartphone performed without a hitch. Toyota hasn’t revealed which of its models will come with the Entune standard, but obviously it will have to be models that have a touchscreen interface on the dashboard. It looks like car owners will have to sign up for the service and buy the Entune app, but will be rewarded with three years of free service. If the software continues to perform as well as it currently does, even with repeated upgrades and newer apps added, it seems likely that Entune will be incredibly popular and soon will be considered a standard part of the Toyota package.

And, when the monitor goes blank once again, you scream — threatening to fling the entire system into the trash and replace it with a far better alternative.

Your frustration is understandable. It is not, however, wise.

Because an all too common problem with computers is the sudden malfunctions of power; and this is easy to solve.

A platform will switch itself off for two reasons: if it is over-heated or if its cables aren’t connected properly. Both of these issues can be fixed quickly, however, and don’t require your shrieking.

If you want to capture a shot of the entire desktop ” then press Command-Shift-3 and the image will be automatically saved as a PNG file on your desktop (PNG stands for portable network graphics).

Copy the Desktop

If you want to copy the image of your entire desktop, to later paste it on another program, you can simply press Command-Control-Shift-3. The screen shot will now be pasted directly onto your clipboard.

Capture a Portion

If you only want to capture a screen shot of a certain area of your desktop, you can press Command-Shift-4, which will make a small cursor appear. You can click and drag the cursor to select the area you would like to capture, and as soon as you release your mouse the screen shot will be automatically saved as a PNG file on your desktop.

Capture an Application Window

If you want to get a screen shot of a specific application window, press Command-Shift-4 and then press Space bar. This time a camera will appear on the screen and you can highlight the area you would like to capture. Once again, once your mouse is released the image will be automatically saved as a PNG file on your desktop.

It’s also useful to note that if you also include Control in the shortcuts, you can change the image from being saved on your desktop ” to your clipboard.

Now you’ve got these tools, you can easily incorporate this way of working into your Mac experience. Before you know it, you’ll be copying, pasting and forwarding screen shots in milliseconds.

How do we quickly get what we want? This concept may have eluded you for quite some time; perhaps you quickly start a new search and try a different route to your research. In reality, there are quick and easy ways for both users of PCs and Macs to get what they’re looking for.

Finding Words on a PC

If you’re using Google, there is a simple solution. If you look at Edit on the menu bar, you’ll see an option of “Find (On This Page)’. Select this, and then write what you are searching for in the box. Next, press “Find Next”. You’ll be taken directly to the place on the website where your words appear.

Finding Words on a Mac

Safari has an excellent way to help users find words on websites. If you press Command-F, a search field appears in the top right window. Once you finish typing it’s off and searching for you, and highlights in yellow the first time the word appears on that page.

If you want to keep looking for more instances of the word on the page, you can press the right arrow button to the left of the search box, and it will take you to the next time the word appears. There is also a nifty little “Done” button for when you’ve finished the hunt.

So there you have it, no more days spent casting your eye over hundreds of words in a futile attempt to find one. Now you know the tools that will take you to exactly where you want to be, fast!

Think First

It’s the old adage: think before you say something. Now it’s about being mindful before you post, upload a photo or video. Would you want your boss to know this? Would you want your mother to know this? Being mindful is now even more important “just because you’re engaging in social media while alone in a room with a computer, it doesn’t mean you’re really alone.

This is particular relevant to when you’re about to write that you’ve had a rubbish day at work. Is that really a good idea? Not only will it probably result in trouble at your job, it’ll also just make you seem negative to hundreds of others. Think first, once you post something it’s out in the ether for evermore.

Brand Yourself

Your presence online is your own subtle form of advertising. What does your profile picture look like? What do your photo albums look like? Will any of this make you seem attractive to a possible new employer?

But Keep Updating

As a professional, it’s a good idea to keep a fairly regular online presence ” so that potential employers are aware of you, and you don’t completely fall off the radar. Aim for consistency in your approach.

But Don’t Go Overboard

Remember that a real, tangible world exists beyond the glow of your computer screen. When it comes to effective communication, often a good, old-fashioned phone call can beat a whole slew of messages online. Life is about living, so remember to get offline regularly and get out there and smell the roses!

The Global Positioning System, better known as GPS, is one of the most used technical systems on the market today! Many are not aware of exactly what it is or the history behind it.

GPS is a space global navigational system that provides information on location and time anywhere on the earth. The sophisticated device is able to guild you no matter what the conditions are. This is due to a special satellite that transmits signals, just the same when it comes to satellite television and cell phones. The GPS system is controlled by the United States government and is freely received to all individuals. Originally, GPS was created and used by the United States Department of Defense. The system was run by 25 satellites and was established in 1973 to overcome limitations of its usage.

Navigational systems were first developed in the early 1940s. In those times it was only a ground based device that was transmitted by radio from systems called LORAN or Decca Navigator during World War II. Friedwardt Winterberg proposed in 1956 that the GPS system be upgraded by using an atomic clock to be placed in orbit in artificial satellites. This was a means to have better accuracy in maneuvering around the world. Later, the inspiration of upgrading the GPS system came from the Soviet Union when Sputnik was created in 1957.

In the 1960s, the first satellite transmitted GPS was successfully tested and used by the U.S. Navy. It was run by five satellites and was able to give out destination readings once an hour. Over time with much research and funding to better develop GPS, it became one of the highest transmitted devices by the military. On May 1st of 2000, President Bill Clinton ordered that military GPS systems by turned off at midnight. This was due to changes that were made to make navigational for civilians to go from 300 feet, to 65 feet, for better accuracy.

Once one converts to Skype conversations, it’s easy to get hooked. Skype is just so easy; we don’t need to remember phone numbers, we can see when people are around and free to talk to us, and it’s so easy to find people and get in touch with them.

But what if we’re doing a lot of business with Skype, or even making a lot of personal calls, and we suddenly have to head out for a few hours, but we still want to be able to receive Skype calls? What if we’ve lined up an important Skype meeting, and suddenly we have to run out the door on a last-minute errand?

Fortunately, there is a very cool function called Call Forwarding that lets us sort this out in a few mere clicks of the mouse.

First off, make sure you have downloaded the most recent version of Skype “older versions may not have this nifty little feature.

Then go to System Preferences and click on the icon that says “˜Calls”. In the call forwarding area you’ll see that it gives you an option to click on”Forward Unanswered Calls To”. Click on this and you’ll see that you can either enter in a Skype name or an actual phone number where you want the calls to be rerouted to.

If you’re running out to pick up your child from school, and are not sure you will be able to hear your phone all the time, you can put in multiple numbers, and also have the Skype call forwarded to your office number as a back-up.

Obviously, there will be a charge if you do forward the call to an actual phone, but when it comes to sticking to our meetings and being there for someone when they call, this is invaluable stuff.

It’s amazing how quickly technology is changing to make our lives easier. Seriously, who needs a secretary these days?

If you haven’t yet investigated Google Docs, you’re going to be thrilled. The platform allows a space for you to collaborate with others, and share your work online.  And along with open source software like open office, you can put together all sorts of professional project for free!

The first step is to sign in. If you don’t yet own one, you’ll need to create a Google account. Next, create your document! You can either upload an existing document or create one online. If you go to the Docs list, you’ll see a tab that says “Create New”, select Document. Make sure you keep pressing Save on the right side of the page as you work on this piece.

Don’t fret if you think your document will only exit in the vast virtual mind of Google. You can also download a copy and save it onto your computer- open it and click on the File menu and you’ll see an option of “Download As”. If you click on this, you can see that you can you download the file as a text, word PDF or more.

The great thing about Google Docs, is that once you’ve got a file online, you can now start to share it and collaborate with other people. You can all work on the file, and share your thoughts, additions and edits.

One good way of conversing around the file, is to add comments ” just click on the mouse at the point where you’d like to insert the comment and click the Insert tab ” the drop down menu lets you add in a comment. You can also keep abreast with all the changes that are being made to a document, by clicking on See Revision History in the File menu.

Once you’ve switched to Google Docs, you’ll see that there’s no need to ever turn back. This online space gives you a place to keep documents up-to-date, a place that allows you to chart everyone’s involvement, and that keeps you all – literally  on the same page.

Cellular phones in Asia and Europe have had cameras and programs that can recognize and translate a variety of barcodes for about a decade. These barcodes were used by retailers in advertisement circulars to direct consumers to websites that gave more information about a product or to “tease” an upcoming release. A customer would use their cell phone to take a picture of the barcode on, say, an ambiguous movie poster. The barcode reader translates the picture to a unique URL that the advertiser has set up and prompts the cell phone’s mobile Internet browser to visit the web page it’s decrypted. Then the user can see the advertiser’s website for the movie, which could include a countdown or more information for the movie that was being depicted in the poster. Barcodes are often used to hype a new release or product before it’s announced, to build up a following before release.

However, barcode technology is becoming increasingly mainstream in the United States as smartphones continue to expand its celluar phone market share. With one in five consumers using cell phones to do some of their holiday shopping this year, the holidays are a great time to expand into hip and trendy technology. MasterCard, Virgin, Apple, Heineken and Nokia all introduced holiday barcode campaigns, from sweepstakes to special offers. Even newspapers, like the prominent New York Times, have used barcodes as a quick and interesting way to include information about online-only multimedia in its print product.

You don’t have to overspend on technology to get the things you want, if you’re careful about what you buy. Most people focus on the big brand names, but there are people who can find great deals by purchasing ‘off-brand’ items. Some of these are much better than others, though, so make sure that you read some reviews and see what people who have these devices are saying about them. If they don’t like them very much, you’ll want to find out why. It’s possible that what they don’t like might not matter to you, but it’s better to know before you buy.

That way you don’t end up purchasing technology that you aren’t happy with. Research is your friend, but so is knowing what you want. That can help stop you from being talked into something that the salesperson thinks you should have, when it’s not really what you came into the store for. It can also help keep you from overspending. Getting what you need is ultimately much better than getting just what you want, but it might not feel like it at the time of purchase. Make a choice based on features, budget, and other factors, and stick with it. You’ll be glad you did.

In particular, pop-up advertisements have become more malicious than ever before, and can hijack your computer before you even realize what’s happening. The appropriately named “scareware” may serve you a popup or sidebar advertisement that claims your computer is infected (some even give the number of threats found) and – often with exclamations – tell you to install some sort of software, toolbar or other program that will help you scan and clean out the computer. The results may look authentic and appear to be providing a real-time scanning of the user’s computer, but this is actually a dead giveaway that a program is a malicious advertisement. No program should be able to scan your hard drive without your permission and on your initiative.

These programs give the impression that you’re only safe if you install their software, but in reality, these types of malware have already resulted in more than $150 million in identity theft loss and computer repairs.

You can minimize the risk of having your computer hijacked by malicious bits of code with just a few simple steps. First of all, make sure to update your operating system with any essential or recommended changes. An updater will usually come pre-installed on your computer, but you can also visit the operating system’s website to find out any latest changes. Second of all, install a reputable anti-virus software and keep it updated.

The last thing you can do to ensure your computer is operated as safely as possible is to use your favorite search engine to look up any program before you install it. If people have had bad experiences, they will usually have posted it as a warning to others.

Choosing what method to use to backup your media before you lose it will save headaches and tears down the road. There are several different options you have to backup your media, depending on these factors: what type of information you’d like to preserve, what the size of the material you’re saving is, if you’d rather have an upfront cost or a long-term cost and if you’d rather store locally or virtually.

External hard drives are similar to the hard drive inside your computer but they connect to your computer through a USB or similar drive already in your computer so you can access both at the same time. External hard drives have widely varying sizes but the most commonly sizes currently available are between 500 gigabytes and 2 terabytes. The amount of storage those sizes represent could contain hundreds of hours of high-definition video or thousands of photos and music files or millions of documents. External hard drives have an upfront cost of around $100 and, just like a computer’s regular hard drive, can become corrupted or break.

Online storage takes the responsibility of storing your data and gives it to someone else. There are plenty of websites that will store various media for you and give plenty of versatility. Some websites will store small amounts of material for you for free. Others take a comparable amount of data that an external hard drive would for a monthly or yearly fee. Search for online storage and then make sure to research the companies you’re considering for reliability and reviews.

It’s meant to be a burst of sound, the meeting of lyrics and melodies. There is only silence to greet you, however — and this is never wanted. You frown, peering down at your MP3 player, wondering why it has failed you. You charged it earlier, and were certain the battery was full. But the power has drained within a matter of moments and that is unacceptable. The technology must be flawed, you think. The components must be ruined. And you resign yourself to purchasing another machine, and are prepared to toss this one into the garbage.

Don’t do that — simply replace the battery.

The most common complication individuals face with their MP3 players is the eventual decay of their battery strengths. What once offered hours of music dwindles to mere minutes. Too often this is thought to represent the end of the players themselves — with us willing to fling them away and spend dollars for another. This is a waste, however. The concern does not lie in the machine. It simply reflects the need for a new lithium source — and an understanding of how to properly maintain that source.

Be certain a battery is charged often (lithium choices maintain themselves longer when charged frequency). Refrain from letting the charge decrease entirely; try instead to re-power it while there’s still some spark left. Always store a MP3 player at room temperature to avoid the battery becoming corroded. And do not try to perform any maintenance on it. When lithium fails, it is because of age — not because it somehow needs mending. Replace any dead batteries and recycle them.

Taking care of a lithium source will ensure that it lasts for a suitable amount of time. It also allows all individuals to be spared the constant costs of purchasing new players. Recognize that the worry is not with the machine: it is merely with the battery.

This difference is important.

The iPhone 4 camera is better than almost every other cell phone camera on the market – not only does it shoot high definition video, but the video it produces is also 720p resolution and 30 frames per second. This is better than some of the cheaper dedicated video cameras available currently. The LED flash is also bright enough to light up the shooting area to produce clear video, even at night.

Open the camera application on the iPhone and slide the switch on the bottom of the screen from still photo mode to video mode. Most video should be shot with the camera held horizontally. Once the camera is in place and you’ve chosen your light options (the lightning bolt icon allows you to choose for the flash to be on, off or auto which forces the camera to choose the best lighting option for you) just tap the red record button and you’re recording video.

Many people will find the use of a tripod to steady the camera as you’re shooting will significantly increase the quality of your video. Hands naturally shake when holding anything – particularly a camera in an awkward position – for too long, so a tripod gives you a break and allows you to set up a shot without holding the camera manually.

The iPhone 4 also has some basic editing capabilities (such as setting start and end points) built directly into the camera application. There are also several video applications that allow more advanced editing functionality.

With the growing popularity of eReaders, many consumers may be wondering which gadget they should be considering when they decide they want a small, lightweight device to read their favorite books on. Obviously, eReaders have overall advantages to books – it’s easier to carry several books on an eReader than it is to bring physical copies of those books. Additionally, eReaders make reading a more discreet past time (no more romance novels with photos of half-naked men on the cover to distract the train passenger across from you) and you’re free to mark up books with annotations, bookmarks and notes with ease.

Kindle

The Amazon Kindle eReader uses e-ink technology, which is said to most closely resemble the written page and also allows you to read in direct sunlight. However, because the reading surface is backlit, you need an additional light in order to read at night or in any sort of darkness. Additionally, the Kindle’s digital rights management software makes it difficult to borrow eBooks from libraries and other sources which offer them. However, you can share Kindle books with other limited Kindle users that you specify on the Amazon site.

Kobo eReader

The Kobo eReader does allow users to borrow books from public libraries, which means that you won’t have to purchase every new book that you want to read in this new format. The device can also process ePub files, something that no other eReader in the $139 price range can do correctly. However, the Kobo eReader does not have as high of a processing speed, and is thus slower than most of the other popular eReaders.

Nook

Barnes and Noble’s Nook Color eReader does render files in color which is good for educational and children’s books. Almost half of the titles in the Nook eBook store are free and the Nook allows access to eBooks lent by public libraries as well as allowing you to share books with friends. The biggest disadvantage is the battery life which is significantly lower than the other two eReaders listed here.
