Extend the Life of a Computer Battery

These questions can usually be answered with a bit of research.

The next question to ask is whether or not you have similar parts already plugged into your computer and the two are interfering. If this is the case try removing one or the other item and see if the computer starts up okay. If the new item is the one you would rather have then try that one first.

If the item is new it doesn’t mean that the driver included in the box is the newest driver. Check for driver updates and make sure that a driver that functions for that device is installed. If all else fails then you can probably call technical support for the new product that you purchased. They may be able to help you get the item installed and functioning and it might not cost you anything.

You Can Fix Your Computer

Just because your computer won’t turn on does not equal the worst nightmare: that the computer is dead. You have had computers for years but you are scared to open the side panel that will expose the computer components and circuit boards. Before you throw you computer out the door or send it to the repair shop, and especially before you panic, you may be able to fix it yourself.

Follow these possible causes and solutions before you go any further. First check that the computer is plugged in. If it is plugged in make sure that there is power going to the outlet where it is plugged in. Go to the electrical panel of the house and rule out lack of available power. If power is going to the outlet, plug something else into the outlet where you plug in the computer and make sure it is getting power. If you have power to that outlet, plug in the computer one more time and make certain that it isn’t working. It still doesn’t turn on.

Now unplug the computer and disconnect the pereiferals from the computer. The power supply will need to be replaced. Once the computer is accepsible open up the panel to expose the circuit boards. Before touching anything inside the computer you must ground yourself so you don’t short out a circuit. The power supply usually has a fan and is the box just inside the computer tower where the power cord plugs in. Study the cables and make sure you know where it plugs in. Don’t panic. Disconnect the unit and unscrew it from the computer frame. This is the power supply and you should take it with you to the computer store. Another option is to access the company that made the computer for you and see if they can send you a replacement. Once you have the new supply hook it up exactly the way the old one was connected. You should be ready to compute.

Data Backup

Are you ready for the inevitable? Did you realize that eventually your hard drive or some other part of your computer will fail? Another option is to have some type of USB memory to back up your data on yourself. This second option is questionable because of the possible failure of these devices as well. A third option is to maintain a network drive where all the computers in the house can back up their files. Any of these options are far better than doing nothing at all. It is up to you, come up with a plan and follow it and your data will be significantly safer.

Organzing and Adding Shortcuts to Your Desktop

Everyone wants to see an nice organized desktop when they open their computer. You may have a background that you like and you want to see your favorite picture and have access to your favorite programs immediately. Here is a little help to make that desktop look the way you want it to.

First let’s set the background how you like it. If you want to select a personal image instead of one of the standard backgrounds then first you can find that image and make sure it is loaded onto your computer. Put the photo in your documents folder rather than on the desktop otherwise it will just be another icon on the desktop.

To add the image to the background it is fairly simple just open the image. If you are looking at the image in windows image and fax viewer all you need to do is right click on the image. In the menu that appears there is a line that says “Set as desktop background”, click that item. The image will be automatically added to your desktop. If it is distorted or not showing in the way you would like, right click on the desktop and choose properties. From here you can choose the desktop tab and choose “Center, Stretch, or Tile”.

Making a shortcut is just as simple. If there is a program you would like a shortcut to on the desktop simply find that program name in the start menu. In the start menu roll over “all programs” and then search the list for the program you would like. Once you find it, right click on the name. In this menu you can choose create shortcut. The shortcut will appear in the list and now you can drag that shortcut to the desktop by clicking and holding as you drag it.

Make Your Computer Life Easier

When you turn on your computer your life should become easier than if you didn’t have a computer. Everyone hopes for that right, but still not everyone achieves that. Part of the issue is a lack of knowledge about how your computer, a tool, works. The best option for someone who feels he or she continues to have computer problems is to take an introductory course. It will help you immensely to just learn some specific techniques about how to operate a computer. You will probably forget more of what you learn in the class than you remember, but sure enough you will be less intimidated the next time you press the on button.

Some functions can be done with the mouse and with the keyboard. Sometimes it is easy to do one or the other depending on the timing of what you need. Some functions like copy, paste or cut (similar to delete) can be done with fewer clicks on the keyboard. Once you have the text highlighted which is often done with the mouse, you can copy the text by simultaneously pushing the CTRL and the C keys. You can also cut the text by pushing the CTRL and the X keys at the same time. This block of text that has been either copied or cut can then be pasted to another location, in the same program or often in another program. You do this by pushing both the CTRL and the V keys at the same time.

What Peripherals Do You Need?

Have you been wondering if you need to purchase anything new for your computer? As computers get smaller and smaller you may be finding that some of the extras that came with your computer no longer are located on board the device. This is with good reason as we find more and more music, movies and software for sale online and downloaded straight to your computer. gone are many of the drives that we used to rely on to load everything onto our computer. So what peripherals do you need?

Peripherals are computer devices that connect to your computer and require the computer to do all or some of their functions. printers, mouse, keyboard, camera, monitor and scanners. Many people are finding that they just don’t need all of these components any longer. An external mouse is nice but my computer has one and so on and so forth. To determine if you need a peripheral first determine what actions you use a computer for. If all you need to do is scan an occasional document you may find that your digital camera will do the job. But if you want to take all of your old photos and make digital copies of them, you may consider purchasing a scanner capable of doing a good job at copying them. Do you need a printer? Most people find that what they print they never use again, they are just used to having a piece of paper. Determine if you really need a printer or if you want one because that is how you used to do things.

It is best to question all of the peripherals you buy because you may find you don’t use something enough to reasonably spend the money on it.

Is There A Problem With My Computer

Have you been having problems on the start up of your Windows based computer system? Do you wait for what seems like an hour to start your computer? have you installed multiple antivirus software programs. If you have these programs may be interfering with one another and causing a start up problem. Consider which program you would like to keep and uninstall the other one or other ones. Try restarting your computer twice to see what happens.

Have you installed many programs on your computer. If so you may have too many programs that open upon start up of your computer. If this is the case you may consider removing some of the programs or at least setting their options not to load upon start up of the computer. This will increase the speed of the start up process.
